Serving the Sacred Mysteries of the Eucharist is a great honor and a great responsibility. It is also a wonderful way for young people to learn more about and be a more active participant in the Mass.
Of all ministries of the church, the server ministry is unique in that it is shared between parents and children. We know this is a significant commitment on your family’s part, and we want your children to enjoy this ministry and grow closer to God through it.
Altar serving at St. Eugene normally begins for children in the 4th or 5th grade and continues through high school and beyond. Children need to be mature enough to understand their responsibilities and to carry them out well and with appropriate reverence. Servers must have already received their first holy communion and normally receive the Eucharist whenever they participate in the liturgy.
St. Eugene provides formation for servers at designated times in the year. Instruction on the Mass parts and their meaning, the objects used in the liturgy (their names and use), and the functions of the server are covered. Servers will also receive tips on decorum and attire when serving Mass.
Please contact Deacon Pat Gaffney to let us know of your interest in altar serving, complete the form below and stay up to date on parish communications for formation dates.
