Catholic schools are often the heart of ministry in parishes. The need to prepare the next generation for leadership, discipleship can be a difficult but urgent task. Here at St. Eugene, our school serves to hand on our Catholic faith and values, but also to create a community.
This weekend, at the beginning of another school year, we pause to celebrate all that is good and holy in the work of a school. We pause to celebrate our school leadership, its teachers, and the many volunteers who enrich its life. We also celebrate the students, the young people who are a visible sign of the future of our parish and our church.
I want to take time to thank everyone in the parish who supports the school. As your new pastor, I have decided to give all my monthly Mass stipends to our school’s scholarship fund. Though not an earth shattering gift, I hope it will raise awareness in the need to keep Catholic education affordable. We can not allow Catholic schools to become the exclusive preserve of the affluent.
If you wish to make a gift this school year to the scholarship fund, please feel free to speak with me or Molly Goldsworthy about the fund.
