I want to do an ad campaign for our parish and I am looking for members of the parish who would agree to be photographed. Because we are a diverse parish, I hope to get a good cross section of the community involved. Basically, we want to show this part of the metro that we have people of every stripe imaginable practicing the Catholic faith here at St. Eugene. Contact the parish office if you would be agreeable to the project and a brief photo shoot.
CATHOLIC BOOK CLUB
I would like to form a Catholic Book Club here in the parish. We’ll meet every month (except December) and discuss a novel with Catholic themes. I would like to begin meeting in September in the rectory. Thus, I will have to cap the size of the club to about 15. I’m thinking Wednesday evenings. Our first novel will be Diary of a Country Priest. Call the office to join and you will be contacted via email about the first meeting.
HUMILITY VS. HAUGHTINESS
You will notice a theme in the readings this weekend: the need to walk humbly. The haughty have no need for God, for their inflated sense of self worth leaves no room for God. The humble are aware that we are in need of the grace of God each and every day of our lives. One way to practice humility is in interaction with wait staff or clerks in stores. To be patient, polite and thankful, even when the service offered is slow, teaches us the power of humility. I read once that the way we speak to the poorest paid employees of a store or organization reveal a great deal about our true character. Another way is to train yourself to be authentically happy for the success of other people. Learning to rejoice in the gifts and talents of others is powerful spiritual work. The humble need not be in the spotlight, because their self confidence comes from being a servant of God.
